World Record Broken at Game & Geek Expo 2026: MarMax Gaming and MPL.GG Shatter the Battletoads Co-Op Record

Some moments at a convention are planned. Panels, guest appearances, tournament brackets. And then there are the moments nobody saw coming that end up defining the whole weekend.

Game & Geek Expo 2026 got one of those moments on the floor of the Raleigh Convention Center this September when MarMax Gaming and David Klinger of MPL.GG shattered their own world record in Battletoads co-op on the original NES.

That is right. Their own record. These two already held the world record coming into GGE 2026 and they broke it again right there on the convention floor in front of a live crowd of thousands.

For anyone who has ever picked up a controller and attempted Battletoads you already know what kind of achievement this is. Battletoads is widely considered one of the hardest games ever made. The co-op mode adds a layer of chaos that has humbled generations of gamers. Getting through it at all is an accomplishment. Doing it faster than anyone in the world, twice, is something else entirely.

MarMax Gaming has built a following on YouTube celebrating retro gaming with genuine passion and deep knowledge of the hobby. He is also the co-founder of MPL.GG, a matchmaking platform designed to help gamers find local multiplayer communities. Fitting then that a record built on local multiplayer cooperation would be broken at a convention built around exactly that kind of community.

GGE 2026 was the backdrop for this record-breaking run and we could not be more proud of that. With over 4,500 attendees, 160+ vendors from across the Southeast, celebrity guests, live professional wrestling, esports world tour qualifiers, and a floor full of gaming history, GGE has always been about celebrating what makes gaming special. Watching a world record fall live on our floor is about as special as it gets.
